Chevy Trailblazer Oil Capacity and Oil Type
Different models of Chevy Trailblazers use varying viscosities of oil depending on the engines, which are V3, V6, and V8

Oil Types and Suitable Oil Viscosity for Chevy Trailblazer

The name Chevy Trailblazer was first used in the 1999 model year, which was an improvement on the compact 4-door Chevy S-10 Blazer.

This new model had additional features such as color-keyed front and rear bumpers, upgraded alloy wheels, an A/M-F/M stereo with a single-disc CD player, etc.

Different models of Chevy Trailblazers use varying viscosities of oil depending on the engines they have under the hood.

If you own any Chevy Trailblazer model, it has a V3, V6, or V8 engine.

The oil capacity also differs among these engine types.

So, you should know what to add to your engine when it is time for an oil change.

For 4.2L V6 engines, the recommended oil type is 5W-30 at all temperatures.

But if you own a 2009 Chevy Trailblazer and live in an area where the temperature falls below the freezing point (-20oF), 0W-30 is the oil viscosity for your engine.

Other models fitted with 5.3L V8 engines also have the same oil requirements as 4.2L V6 engines.

The 6.0L V8 engines in the 2009 model require 0W-30 oil for temperatures below -20oF and 5W-30 when the temperature rises above that.

Lastly, the latest Chevy Trailblazer models with 1.2L V3 engines use 5W-30 at all temperatures and 0W-30 when it drops below -20oF. The 1.3L V3 version requires 0W-20 at any temperature.

Oil viscosity is how thick it is or how easily the oil flows.

You need the correct oil viscosity for your Chevy Trailblazer for efficient engine operation.

Some oil types can become too thin at high temperatures, thereby failing to lubricate and cool the engine.

Also, an oil type that gets too thick at low temperatures can cause hard starts.

2002-2009 Trailblazer Oil Capacity and Oil Type

The 2002-2009 Chevy Trailblazer models have either 4.2L V6, 5.3L V8, or 6.0L V8 engines.

Each engine type requires a different oil viscosity to function optimally.

The 4.2L V6 Trailblazer models made from 2002 to 2009 have an oil capacity of 7 quarts and the recommended oil type at all temperatures is SAE 5W-30. Use 10W-30 when the temperature is above 0oF.

The same engine type in 2005-2008 Trailblazers requires 5W-30 oil at all temperatures.

But if you own the 2009 model with a 4.2L V6 engine, use 0W-30 oil type when the temperature drops below -20oF.

5.3L V8 engine in the 2003 and 2009 Trailblazer models uses 6 quarts of 5W-30 oil at all temperatures.

For the 2003-2004 models, it’s better to use 10W-30 when the temperature is above 0oF.

The 2002-2009 6.0L V8 Trailblazers take 6 quarts of oil.

The engines fitted in 2006-2008 models require an oil viscosity of 5W-30 at all temperatures, while those in the 2009 models use 0W-30 for temperatures below -20oF.

2021-2022 Trailblazer Oil Capacity and Oil Type

The 2021-2022 Trailblazers have either 1.2L V3 or 1.3L V3 engines.

The 1.2L Trailblazers require 4.2 quarts of oil with an oil viscosity of 5W-30 at all temperatures and 0W-30 for temperatures below 20oF.

On the other hand, the 1.3L Trailblazer models take 4.8 quarts of 0W-20 at all temperatures.

Conclusion

Ensure that you always use the correct oil viscosity and quantity on your Chevy Trailblazer.

Check the engine size and model year under the hood to determine the engine oil you need for optimal performance in all conditions.

Using the wrong one can damage your engine or cause problems, such as hard starts.

  1. I’ve been running 5w30 in my 2005 in-line 6 cyl. I feel like the oil is too thin too fast. Should I use 10w30?
